Sluggers Game Summary FIDELITY August 31
Come-Back Fidelity Overpowers Sluggers
Eight-run seventh inning lifts Capitalist Pigs over Sluggers 18-14
--BOSTON, August 31, 2004
The last time these two teams met (May 18), it was just the second game of the season. In that contest, the Sluggers overcame a three-run deficit with a seven-run seventh inning to beat Fidelity 11-7.
This time the Capitalist Pigs prevailed by coming back from a one-run deficit with an eight-run seventh inning.
"This game meant everything to Fidelity," said Sluggers coach, Ted "Ballgame" Johnson during the post-game Stephen Colbert look-alike contest. "This game meant nothing to us. It was a warm-up. We already clinched a bye into the championship game."
Warm-up they did. The Sluggers hacked out 26 hits. Unfortunately, few of those hits actually drove in runs.
Offensive Play of the Game
With two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Sluggers were up 10-7 and looking for some insurance with Will "The Natural" Jamieson standing on first. Dan "Dinger" Landesman hit an 0-2 breaking ball for his team-leading fifth triple of the season to drive in Jamieson and give the Sluggers a comfortable cushion--maybe too comfortable.
Defensive Play of the Game
In the top of the fourth inning, one unnamed Fidelity player tried to sneak an infield single when he caromed a liner off the glove of BASH (Bald Ass Stan Hunting) at third base. Unfortunately for the Capitalist Pigs, shortstop Will "The Natural" Jamieson was alert to the carom, and threw it to first baseman Ted "Ballgame" Johnson for the out. It wasn't even close.
Stats from the Maniacal One
Here are this weeks off-beat
stats from the Maniacal One:
- Hanging With My Homies: Fidelity left an estimated five runners
on base; the Sluggers left an insane 14 players hanging.
- Order In the Court: The Capitalist Pigs were
set down in order in the first and fourth innings.
No One Likes a Perfectionist
No Sluggers batted 1.000 on the day.
Player of the Week
With incumbent starter, Brian "Wightman Can't Jump" experiencing "flu like symptoms," and number two starter, Noah "Cruise Missile" Cushing attending to "personal business," coach Ted "Ballgame" Johnson needed to call on a brand new Slugger. Adam "Cool Papa" Belmont's clutch pitching performance made him a shoe-in for PotW honors.
See Belmont's Player of the Week stats here.
In the Running
Will "The Natural" Jamieson again led the team in RBI from the three hole. Jamieson went 4 for 5 with a double, a solo homer, 4 RBI, and 5 runs.
Injury Report
Counting their lucky stars, the Sluggers have no players on the disable list (DL) going into the championship game.
The
Rumor Mill
Rumor has it that Dan "Dinger" Landesman is bidding the Sluggers farewell. An anonymous source states that after eight years in the Sluggers system, Landesman is thinking about trading in his spikes for ice skates. Yes, it's a surprise to no one that Landesman is finally turning his hobby into a career. He's going on the Rockin' Skate USA Tour.
Please come to Landesman's final game on Wednesday, September 15th to bid farewell to one of the original Sluggers, who has been the heart and soul of this team for nearly a decade of summers.
Quote of the Week
"Those guys are so nice."--Baby Blue (as the official scorer called her), Fidelity catcher, referring to the Sluggers
Next Game
The Sluggers enjoy their first appearance in a championship game on Wednesday, September 15th on Field 1. They take on the winner of the State Street/Fidelity match-up on Tuesday, the 14th. Any fan wearing
a unitard that reads "World Champion Sluggers" gets a free pitcher of beer at the Red Hat and beautiful Russian waitress Maria's phone number after the game.
