Sluggers Game Summary

August 24

Sluggers Tipped by Mad Cows 11-10

Sluggers record falls to 10-1 as they allow four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to lose 11-10

--BOSTON, August 24, 2004

"Testa was throwing trash up on the mound there tonight," said Sluggers coach, Teddy "Ballgame" Johnson during his post game translation practice. "He's the ultimate junk baller."

MDC has more rainouts (seven) versus the Sluggers than any other team. This season was no exception, when the teams were rained out on May 25th. Early season rainouts benefit MDC because it allows them to replace their older, less athletic starters with stronger, more virile college interns. On July 6, those interns didn't help MDC, as they fell to the then red-hot Big Red Machine 14-9.Tonight however, the frat brothers from UNH combined to hit two home runs, and four doubles, and a triple.

Meanwhile, the other bench produced only two extra-base hits, a double by Steve "Wheels" Baer and a two-run home run by Adam "Plant The" Seidman.

Offensive Play of the Game
Tonight's Offensive Play of the Game occurred in the top of the first inning with one out when Adam "Plant The" Seidman hit a two-run homer, driving in Kevin "Mordecai" McKeon, who had reached on an RBI single.

Other Offensive Highlights
Steve "Wheels" Baer hit a two-out RBI double in the fifth inning to give the Sluggers a 10-4 lead.

Defensive Play of the Game
This week's Defensive Play of the Game occurred in the bottom of the third inning when Sluggers short stop Will " The Natural" Jamieson, first baseman Pat "Carnage" Carney, and third baseman BASH (Bald Ass Stan Hunting) combined in a rare 6-3-5 double play to throw out "Talkative Red/Blue Hat" and "Whiny Black Socks" (as the official scorer called them) at first and third base respectively for the second and third outs of the inning, negating an earlier error.

Other Defensive Highlights
The vaunted Sluggers defense pulled off another double play in the bottom of the fourth inning when Craig "Trump Card" Trumm made a fancy flip to Will " The Natural" Jamieson, who forced out "Arthur Fonzerelli" (as the official scorer called him) at second before firing a bullet to first baseman Pat "Carnage" Carney to get "Blue Shorts/Testa's Wife" for the inning-ending twin killing.

Not to be outdone, Sluggers catcher Whitney "The Litany" Brown also through out "Blue Shorts/Testa's Wife," who had tried to bunt for a single with the infield pulled back with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Brown made a heck of a throw over the runner's left shoulder to Pat "Carnage" Carney.

Carney earned Defensive Player of the Week honors due to his role in both of these double plays as well as another nice scoop to save an error. In all, Carney had seven putouts and one assist on the night.

Stats from the Maniacal One
Here are this week’s off-beat stats from the Maniacal One:

  • Left of Center: MDC and the Sluggers stranded five runners each.
  • Ducks in a Row: The Mad Cows were never set down 1-2-3 in this contest. The Sluggers went in order in the second.

Perfect Bliss
The following Sluggers batted 1.000 on the day:

Player of the Week
Will "The Natural" Jamieson earned Player of the Week honors by going 2 for 3 with 4 ribbies and a run scored. On the other side of the ball, Jamieson had at least three assists and one putout at short stop. (The official scorer didn't show up until the second inning.) It should also be noted that the PotW committee seems to favor Jamieson's dashing good looks and gritty softball demeanor.

Injury Report
Noah "n$" Cushing (shoulder) who is on the 15-day disabled list (DL) picked up a save in a rehab start for Triple-A Tucson tonight.

Dan "Dinger" Landesman (knee) is listed as day-to-day after banging his knee into the wall catching a foul ball in Wednesday's game against CRP, but remained in that game after receiving treatment, the Associate Press reports.

The Rumor Mill
State Street is said to be attempting to woo Sluggers closer Noah "n$" Cushing out of his red sleeves as they make a push for the playoffs. Cushing is in the final year of a two-year $4.5 million contract. His agent, Kristen "Killer" Smith says that Cushing will test the free agent market after the season.

Quotes of the Week

  • "Great teams on winning streaks have a lot of luck involved."--Steve "Wheels" Baer, Sluggers center fielder during pre-game warm ups
  • "This is softball!"--"Whiny Black Socks" (as the official scorer called him), MDC pinch hitter, on being intentionally walked in the bottom of the seventh inning with runners on second and third

Next Game
After an 10-1 run, the Sluggers have just one game left in the regular season. They take on the Fidelity Capitalist Pigs on Tuesday, August 31 on Field 2 for the first time since Week 2 of the season (Tuesday, May 18th), when the Sluggers rallied to win 11-7. This time, the Sluggers need to prove that they are ready for the post season. Any fan wearing a bib that says "Capitalist Pig Roast" gets a free beer at the Red Hat after the game.
